Things to do on site and in the Shap area
If you enjoy the outdoors, you won't be short of opportunities to get out and about around Shap and the Lakes.
The campsite is right on Wainwright's Coast to Coast route and the Westmoreland Way, so it would be hard to say no to an overnight stay if you're passing. From the very door of New Ing there are secluded walks into the fells of the Lake District, particularly the local hidden valley of Swindale. The Howgills and the Pennines are all only a short drive away and easily accessible.
Riding the quiet rural roads over the rolling terrain is an exhilarating way to discover the scenery available heading into the Lake District or fabulous Yorkshire. The landscape is perfect for a calm bike ride around lakes, forests and valleys. For the adventurous mountain bikers, Whinlatter Forest offers an ever-growing maze of trails. Find it around 30 minutes by car from your pitch in the idyllic town of Keswick.
If you've ever enjoyed the classic dark comedy Withnail and I, the surroundings of Shap will look strangely familiar, as an important filming location for some of the best scenes. To take the tour, start with Sleddale Hall (Withnail's uncle's cottage) located by Wet Sleddale Reservoir just outside Shap.
Not far from that you'll find the bridge where Withnail and Marwood go fishing, located at the bottom of the hill below Sleddale Hall. The phone box where Withnail calls his agent is besides the main road in Bampton and "the Bull scene" was filmed just out of Bampton towards Shap.
Lowther Castle with its impressive outdoor estate is only a 10-minute drive from the lodge. It will tempt you with stunning grounds, luscious gardens to explore and an exciting children's mock castle play area, something that kids will really love.
