The Herdwick Huts have their own site within the magnificent grounds of Rydal Hall, in the heart of the Lake District. Nestled beneath the Fairfield Horseshoe, the location is hard to beat. A walk through a stunning woodland sculpture path takes you to Rydal Hall and its extensive 34 acre grounds. There are also paths which lead past cascading waterfalls and secret pools - perfect for wild swimming.

A perfect base to explore the Lake District

We really enjoyed our stay here! We were traveling without a car, which is why it was very convenient for us that the campsite is easily accessible by public transport and that we could easily get to Ambleside and Grasmere on foot or by bus. It's a perfect base from which to explore the Lake District! The site itself is beautifully situated and you can also go on wonderful walks directly from there. The cabins are very well equipped and the furnishings are very well thought out. Although they are small, you can spend a lot of time there and also cook without suffering from cabin fever. We were there at the end of September and were worried about the weather. But the wood-burning stove heats very well, so we were never cold. I suspect that you can even feel comfortable there in winter. The sanitary facilities are in very good condition, but you have to walk for about five minutes (hence one star deduction for facilities). However, this also has the advantage that you are very undisturbed. Sarah, the hostess, was always easy to reach and very helpful. We can therefore definitely recommend Herdwick Huts, especially for people who don't travel by car but still want to be in the countryside.
Perfect cosy retreat on a beautiful site!

We had a fantastic stay in the Herdwick Huts on the grounds of Rydal Hall. The location is phenomenal- easy to walk into Ambleside or Grasmere, and regular buses from the doorstep, which can take you further afield to Keswick, Windermere etc. There are so many stunning walks on the doorstep! The shepherd's hut was spotlessly clean, very comfortable bed. The log fire made the whole place very warm, and there is a handy gas hob for cooking or making a cup of tea. The grounds of Rydal Hall are spectacular, with a beautiful waterfall running through the middle. We had breakfast each morning in the little café on the site. The shower blocks were extremely clean and showers were always hot. Brilliant value for money, we've vowed to come back every year!

Bit of a struggle with two children

Fantastic and relaxing location. Easy short walk to Rydal water and the waterfalls. Beautiful to swim in the warm lake on a summers evening. I travelled as a single parent with my two daughters aged 9 & 7. They are very outdoorsy and adventurous and we spent our week walking a couple of wainwrights mountains, paddle boarding and wild swimming. Despite us being very low maintenance, I do not think we would return. Too much of struggle with no running water (which I didn't think is made clear enough). Plus, nearest toilet is a walk through a woodland and down a slope, resulting in it being difficult with two children to access toilet facilities in the middle of the night and me being unwilling to leave the girls to access them myself during the early hours. Also, the top bunk is positioned very close to the ceiling of the shepherds hut. My very slim, athletic 9 year old struggled to access the bunk and there are no ladders to help get getting ups and down from it. We enjoy the week stay, but a few more handy facilities would have been beneficial.

Hi Sarah, thank you so much for your feedback. Just to let you know that each of the huts do have a wooden bunk ladder underneath the beds to make the bunk more accessible. Again, thanks for your feedback. Sarah.

We enjoyed our stay at the Herdwick Huts very much. The huts are cozy, comfortable and a good size for a couple. We enjoyed the central location in the Lake District, the surrounding area with the waterfall and the sheep, the Tea Shop and the proximity to many hiking trails. The facilities were modern and mostly clean. The huts are near a bus stop with a good connection to Ambleside and Windermere. The walk to the showers is quite long and it would be nice to have a proper reading lamp in the hut, but everything else was great.
Lovely family holiday in the lakes!

It was our first visit to Herdwick Huts and will not be the last, we had a lovely holiday from start to finish. The huts were lovely and clean and enough space between them so it was quiet and private. The views were amazing looking out over the fells of an evening with a cold beer, BBQ and fire going - you couldn't ask for anymore. It was only a 2 minute walk to the clean toilet block and a further 2 minutes to the shower block, which again was spotless. Excellent pub 'The Badger' at the bottom of the road and also a bus stop so very easy to get around. I would definitely recommend Herdwick Huts and we will be back again very soon, possibly in October when it's colder and we can try the wood burner in the hut!
Great place for couple and a dog

Excellent cabin with lots of amenities located at the starting point for some of the best walks in the lakes. No need to drive and park. Ambleside and Grasmere are also within walking distance of shops and the pub 😊
