Terrifying Zombie Experiences

The UK's weirdest and most unusual days out

Would you like to go somewhere that’s different, unusual or just plain weird and guaranteed to be as far away from boring as you can get? Tired of the same old activities when you’ve got some leisure time to spend? These unusual days out will ensure your downtime isn’t a drag…

The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker

Entrance is via an unassuming 1950’s bungalow, but hidden 38 metres deep beneath this ordinary looking house in Brentwood is the fascinating Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker. Not so secret anymore, self-guided tours of the bunker for children and adults include the chance to try on military uniforms and gas masks as well as watch several films along the way. Entry is £7 for adults and £5 for children aged 5 to 16.

The Booth Museum

The Booth Museum of Natural History in Brighton is over a century old and offers an amazing array of oddities to entice visitors both young and old. From plants, rocks and minerals to stuffed birds, fossils, bones and insects, there is plenty to marvel at. In addition, there is no entry charge so this is both fun and free entertainment.

And because you like weird and wacky, why not book a stay in the Blackberry Wood helicopter? Converted into the Holicopter (see what they did there?), it sleeps four with a well equipped outdoor kitchen.

Cheese rolling at Cooper's Hill

The famous and thrilling event of cheese rolling at Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire has attracted thousands of people every year to watch daredevils in all their glory hurtle down a very very steep hill chasing after a large Double Gloucester cheese (though a plastic version was used in 2013). Though the event, which goes back to at least the 1800s, was officially cancelled in recent years over health and safety concerns, loyal supporters have ensured an unofficial version occurs annually.

Zombie Experiences

When the inevitable zombie outbreak threatens to take over the UK, aren’t you going to be glad you tested your survival skills with a Zombie Experience day? A variety of oppourtunites to battle with real zombies are on offer across England, such as clearing out a creepy manor house and the surrounding grounds, reclaiming a secret bunker, overcoming the dead hordes in an abandoned shopping mall or even zombie boot camp where you…um….give zombies the boot and then some.

The Hunterian Museum

Do you like to mix art with medicine or currency with scientific instruments? Well the Hunterian Museum is just the place to go. This museum, situated in Glasgow, is the oldest public museum in Scotland and offers its visitors a number of diverse and delightful collections for a full day of exciting exploring. Entry is free but there is a charge for special exhibitions of £6.50.

The Puzzling Place

If you like nothing better than boggling your brain with puzzles, the Puzzling Place in Keswick is sure to confound your senses and provide eye-popping excitement for adults as well as children. The shop and Puzzle Area are free to enter and there is a small charge of £3.75 for adults and £2.90 for children (free for kids younger than 5) to enter the World of Illusion. Incredible illusions wait to wow visitors in this area, including the “Anti-Gravity” room, the Ames Room where people appear to grow or shrink depending on where they stand, the Hologram Gallery, as well as the Eyelusions exhibition.

Portmeirion

Stemming from the creative mind of architect Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is a Welsh coastal village boasting its own peninsula, an abundance of colourful architecture and stunning gardens. The idea behind the creation of the village was to show how architecture and the landscape can be combined harmoniously rather than detracting from the beauty of nature. Day entry to the village is £10 for adults, £6 for children aged 5 to 15 and free for children under 5 years old.

Thrills and chills for a day out with a difference

Every now and again it’s good to treat yourself to something fun and unusual and the attractions above certainly offer plenty of enticing fun, whether you’re looking for a whacky family day out or a wild time with friends.
