Enjoy fishing in Yorkshire

Our 5 favourite places to go fishing in Yorkshire

The county of Yorkshire has a huge choice of places to try your hand at catching a fish or two. Here are our 5 favourite places to go fishing in Yorkshire…

Helwith Bridge Fly Fishery

Helwith, near to Ingleton, has excellent views of the surrounding Yorkshire Dales and the fell Pen-Y-Ghent, one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks. The spring-fed lake is 30 feet deep, and is well-stocked with brown, golden, blue and rainbow trout. Fishing costs £21 for 8 hours, £17 for 5 hours, or £11 for a 3-hour evening visit. You can also get lessons in Spey Casting – it’s £30 for one hour tuition and 4 hours fishing.

Raygill Fishing Lakes

At Raygill there are four lakes to choose from which are home to coarse, pike and trout fish. You can also enjoy the Wildlife & History Trail, a picturesque walk where you will find interesting facts about the animals living in the local area. Fly fishing costs £25 per day and coarse fishing costs £6 per day.

Semerwater

The largest glacial lake in North Yorkshire, Semerwater is the perfect place for a spot of bream, roach, perch pike and wild trout fishing. Situated in picturesque Raydale, the lake is also the source of the shortest river in Britain – the River Bain. This unspoilt lake is a good choice for those who are on family holidays with non-fishers, as it is a great base for walking, mountain biking, canoeing and windsurfing. Fishing is charged by the rod – with 1 rod costing £5.50; 2 rods £9.00; 3 rods £11.00.

Scarborough Harbour

Scarborough Harbour is a great place to pick up boat for sea fishing. There are lots of boats you can hire or charter: Skylark is one example – a 35 foot long charter vessel takes trips of up to 12 people out to the best local fishing spots. You can also enjoy angling from the piers and beaches here.

Bridlington

The historic harbour of Bridlington is another good sea fishing spot and a great base if you wish to try your hand at fishing on the North Sea. Again, there are plenty of boats here to hire and charter. The harbour is home to dab, flounder and whiting.

Information

It’s best to be prepared before a fishing trip – check the weather well in advance to make sure it’s suitable to be fishing in the sea. If you are new to the sport then it’s a good idea to be instructed by a professional angler, particularly if you are sea fishing because of the extra dangers it poses. And remember that you must have a National Rod Licence from the Environment Agency to fish anywhere in the UK, so this is one thing to check off the holiday list well in advance if you plan on doing any fishing!

There are lots of tackle shops where you can buy equipment in the area. Once you know where in Yorkshire you plan on staying you can search for your nearest shop by area on the Yorkshire Fishing website.
