1. Visit Heartlands for a day out that everyone will love
Heartlands is a cultural playground that offers both indoor and outdoor fun to appeal to people of all ages. Outside you can explore gardens that contain a variety of plants from Cornwall and countries around the world, while kids will love going wild in Cornwall’s biggest free adventure playground. There are a number of artists’ studios where you can watch the artists at work. Most importantly, Heartlands is surrounded by an area designated as a World Heritage Site for its importance to the mining industry in Cornwall. You can explore a variety of excellent exhibitions related to the Cornish tin mining industry here - which is a lot more interesting than it sounds!
2. Bask at the beach
Cornwall boasts a fantastic range of beaches that suit all tastes and ages. For beach visitors who are seeking somewhere quieter to roam, Mother Ivey’s Bay offers a beautiful stretch of sheltered sand and is also dog-friendly for people who would like a day out exploring with their pooch. Surfers of all abilities will appreciate the likes of the Blue Flag winner Polzeath Beach, while the beach at Poldhu Cove is a good choice for families.
3. Take a trip to a museum
Visiting a free museum is a great way to gather new knowledge and see a variety of intriguing objects without spending any money. Perranzabuloe Museum offers an assortment of displays ranging from areas such as farming and fishing to surfing and mining to name a few, all of which provide insight into the history of the seaside town of Perranporth and nearby villages.
4. Explore a nature reserve
If you’re seeking fresh air, incredible scenery and the chance to enjoy it all at your leisure you can do just that courtesy of the beautiful Bodmin Moor which is home to several nature reserves. One such reserve is Golitha Falls National Nature Reserve which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its assortment of flora. Another great option situated at the northern end of Bodmin is the Priddacombe Downs Nature Reserve. Some of the attractions within the nature reserve include a Bronze Age cairn as well as ancient standing stones.
5. Have fun with history
Anyone who is interested in ancient architecture should make their way to St Catherine’s Castle which is a pair of artillery forts dating from the 1530s. St Catherine’s Castle was constructed on the orders of Henry VIII in order to defend Fowey Harbour. There are two storeys, with gun ports on the ground floor and the first floor level.
6. Head out for an arty adventure
Art lovers can also enjoy a free day out exploring their passion courtesy of a visit to the Tate Gallery St Ives. Visitors can take a guided tour of the gallery to gain more insight into it and there are free events held at various times throughout the year.
