While tourist honey pots such as Cornwall, Dorset and Devon may be most associated with camping and British summer holidays in the south, the UK is filled with several slightly overlooked destinations which are just as good to visit. One of these spots is the county of Essex to the north east of London.

One key element of any camping holiday is food options away from the campsite. Although Essex has many metropolitan pockets, the area also has a diverse range of landscapes, restaurants and eateries filled with plenty of local produce for a top-rate dining experience. Here is a handy guide to help you find the best places to eat in Essex.

Horndon on the Hill

Away from the crowds and noise of Essex’s larger towns is the lovely historic village of Horndon on the Hill. Located in the unitary authority of Thurrock in the very south of Essex, Horndon on the Hill is the site of the 15th century wool market and many of its buildings, including the public house the Bell Inn, date back to this time. Due to its historical landmarks, the village is classed as a conservation area. The Bell Inn, which has been owned by the same family for 75 years, is what you might class as a ‘proper’ pub with hand pump ales, a roaring fire and locals lining the bar. The Sunday Times named the Bell Inn, with its ever-changing British menu, as one of the 10 best gastropubs in the UK in 2010. While you can expect an average spend of around £7 for a starter, its wholesome mains cost around £17. While in the village, you may want to pop into its other public house, the Swan, or wander around its supposedly haunted streets.

Colchester

The historic town of Colchester, with its long list of attractions and things to do, is a great getaway for campers of all ages. After a long day exploring Colchester, weary travellers can rest their feet at the Crown Inn in the picturesque village of Stoke by Nayland for some locally-sourced fine meals and excellent service. With views over the surrounding countryside, The Crown Inn provides a seasonal, rustic menu that often includes a catch of the day from the nearby Blackwater estuary. Expect to pay just £6.50 for a two course lunch from its fixed menu from Monday to Saturday.

Mersea Island

For a truly unique experience, head over to Mersea Island by car or foot across the Strood causeway. Located 9 miles from Colchester, Mersea Island is a relatively unspoilt area which still relies on oyster fishing, farming and the boating industry for its economy. Mersea’s idyllic beaches and vast stretches of estuary are great for a quiet, scenic day out with plenty of walks along the way. Stop off at the Victory on Coast Road to sample its heart meals for an affordable price. The Victory, with its stunning views of the Blackwater estuary, boasts several awards, including Best Leased Pub and East Anglia Food Pub of the Year.

Chelmsford

The City of Chelmsford in the center of Essex is just a 35 minute train ride from the lights of London. While the county town is a lively hub filled with convenient cafes, restaurants and shops, the historical city is surrounded by quaint villages and beautiful English countryside, perfect for setting up camp in. The Chelmsford Cathedral, Chelmsford Museum and walks along its two rivers, namely the River Chelmer and the River Can, are popular things to do for tourists. Although there are many eateries to choose from, the Compasses in the hamlet of Littley Green in a must-visit traditional pub for real Essex ales from a traditional cellar alongside some local cuisine, including the famous Essex Huffer. Alternatively, you can also stop off at the Chip Shop in Springfield on Bodmin for a bite to eat on the go. Although this little fish and chip outlet may not be very pleasing to the eye, its food, prices and staff are all top notch.
