Kayaking on Lake Windermere, Lake District

Kayaking in the Lake District: Everything you should know

If you are off on holiday to the Lake District, kayaking or canoeing is a great way to get a different perspective on this stunning national park.

Kayaking here can suit all ages and ability levels, from those who are experienced with the sport to total beginners and younger ones. It's an activity that all the family can enjoy and it allows you to get out and about on the lakes themselves.

Here are some of the best spots for canoeing and kayaking in the Lake District, and some general advice for those of you trying it for the first time.

You can canoe or kayak all over the Lake District and there is good white-water for those who are advanced. You can see an extensive list of canoe and kayak providers here.

Canoe or Kayak?

The word canoeing is often used to describe both canoes and kayaks, and some people wrongly consider a kayak to be a type of canoe. Technically speaking, a canoe is an open style boat which you can either sit or kneel in, and it is propelled with a single blade paddle. They are typically crewed by two or more people and are great for leisurely boating.

Kayaks are fully enclosed boats which you sit in with your feet out in front of you and propel with a double bladed paddle. Kayaks are suitable for all kinds of water, from rivers and rapids to coastal surf.

Ullswater

Ullswater is a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking. Aside from the wonderful views offered by getting out on the lake, there are three amazing islands and lots of lovely beaches to explore.

You can hire canoes and kayaks for around £10 an hour from the Glenridding Sailing Centre, who also offer a variety of courses in kayaking, canoeing and sailing. They supply kayaks for one or two people, so it's an ideal spot if you have young children with you.

Windermere

Lake Windermere is the biggest lake in England and at 10.5 miles long, there are many great spots here for canoeing. This is the most popular lake for visitors so it can get busy.

You can hire canoes and kayaks all around the lake. The Low Wood Watersports Centre is a British Canoe Union approved centre and offer kayak hire from £14 for a single boat and £18 for a double per hour.

You'll never run out of things to do on Windermere, so it's a great place to camp.

Coniston Water

Coniston Water is a fantastic place for both canoeing and kayaking. The entire lake can be explored in one day, and the scenery is absolutely breath-taking.

This is a good place to begin if you are feeling a little nervous about trying kayaking for the first time or concerned about taking young children. At Coniston Boating Centre you can hire kayaks and canoes at reasonable prices and there’s a good café nearby.

General Rules of Conduct

Although the Lake District encourages kayaking as a great way to see the stunning lakes and scenery there are some rules and regulations to ensure the safety of you, others around you and the natural surroundings.

If you see wildlife during your kayaking trip, you must do all you can to not disturb them. Give them plenty of room to get past you or escape if they feel threatened, and be careful not to harm any wild plants and habitats that wildlife may depend upon.

It should go without saying that you mustn't drop any litter whilst out in your kayak, as while on land, and you should keep well clear of any anglers and their fishing tackle - makng as little disturbance as possible to the water.

Equipment and Safety

The lakes here are deep and cold, so drowning and hypothermia are risks for kayakers who do not wear life jackets. The best time of year to kayak is ideally in spring and summer where there are more chances of a clear, dry day, with gentle water and no strong winds. Be aware of the larger boats that operate on the lakes and give them a wide berth!

Life jackets and helmets will be available wherever you hire your boat.

In windier conditions, beginners and children should stay close to the shore where help can easily be reached if you encounter any problems.
