Muncaster Castle

There’s such a variety of things to see and do at Muncaster Castle that a single visit might not be enough! Reputed to be one of the most haunted castles in Britain, Muncaster regularly hosts paranormal researchers as well as the occasional overnight stay for brave members of the public who want to take their chances with spooky sightings.

If ghostly goings-on send a shiver down your spine there’s more than enough to see during a day visit. Discover the striking interiors of the castle as you learn about its history and then take a leisurely ramble in the gorgeous gardens. Children can enjoy getting active in the playground and outside is another treat for the whole family – the World Owl Centre which contains over 40 different kinds of owls.

Honister Slate Mine

Honister Slate Mine in Keswick promises a day of action and adventure which children and adults will remember for years to come. An underground mine tour will awe older and younger visitors alike.

Visitors who are up for a bit of a challenge and keen to see the Lake District’s incredible views from a unique angle should definitely make time to complete the Via Ferrata Classic which is a mountain climbing experience that follows the original miners’ route to the top and is suitable for most ages.

For something a bit more extreme try the appropriately named Via Ferrata Xtreme which involves the likes of vertical climbs and crossing a bridge suspended high above the ground while taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Derwentwater

What’s a visit to the Lake District without visiting at least one of the lakes? Derwentwater is a fantastic choice for a family day out as there are many exciting things for visitors of all ages to enjoy here.

If you’re keen to take things at a sedate pace and enjoy laidback sightseeing then a cruise on the lake is a must. If you fancy getting more hands-on, there is a wide choice of water activities to try such as sailing, rowing, windsurfing, swimming and fishing. Or just hire a boat and explore!

There are four permanent islands in Derwentwater, three of which boaters are allowed to visit as long as they do not stay the night, disturb nesting birds or light fires. Of course, a walk around the lake is also a great way to see the striking natural surroundings. Beatrix Potter spent summer holidays at the stately homes of Lingholm and Fawe Park on the north western side of the lake which provided inspiration for some of her books.

Hill Top

Anyone who has been enthralled by Beatrix Potter’s tales will delight in a visit to Hill Top in Ambleside which was Beatrix Potter’s 17th century farmhouse. Visitors can see a variety of objects in the farmhouse and will recognise scenes from her books, while the garden outside also offers picturesque explorations. There may be a wait to enter the house as it can get very busy but the wait is well worth it in order to discover the charming world of Beatrix Potter.

Loughrigg Fell

The Lake District boasts some of the most spectacular landscapes in the UK and one of the best ways to explore them is on foot. Loughrigg Fell, which is one of the smaller Wainwright Fells, is a good choice for families as there is plenty to see while enjoying an easy to moderate walking route. Sights include the beautiful Rydal Water, caves and Grasmere Cairn in addition to great panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis

If you love animals, herd the family up and pay a visit to Lakeland Wildlife Oasis near Milnthorpe for a wild day out. The great range of animals which include the likes of snow leopards, snakes, hedgehogs, meerkats, red squirrels, lemurs and marmosets to name a few ensures that all members of the family will be delighted by a visit to this engaging wildlife attraction.
