The most dog friendly beaches in Devon listed
Across the world, dogs are considered to be man’s best friend. To many, they are a part of the family. So why wouldn’t we take them on holiday with us? If you’re bringing your dog with you, then you may need to know where you can visit with your pet. Here, we list the best dog-friendly beaches in Devon for you and your pet to enjoy!
Woolacombe
This three mile golden sand beach in north-west Devon is hugely popular with families and keen surfers. Woolacombe is also great for dogs! There are restrictions in place from April to November in the small area between Mill Rock and the north end of the beach, but the rest of the beach and the sand dunes are free for your dog to explore at any time of year!
Saunton Sands
Just six miles south of Woolacombe is Saunton Sands Beach. There are some simple zones on the beach where you will need to keep your dog on a lead. If you would like to bypass these rules, simply walk through the car park and pass the dunes onto the beach where no lead are required at any time of year. If you are holidaying in Devon between October and April, then you can also take your dog to nearby Croyde Bay. This is a flat sandy beach with many facilities, including loos, a café and water sports equipment hire.
Beesands
This secluded and quiet shingle beach is hidden away in south Devon. There are absolutely no dog restrictions to worry about. Because it is a quieter beach, Beesands is one of the best for those taking their pet on holiday for the first-time. After a visit to the beach, you can also check out the small village or explore the nearby freshwater lake with your four-legged friend.
Soar Mill Cove
By far the smallest beach on this list, Soar Mill Cove is a small inlet surrounded by cliffs. It is slightly tricky to access and can only be reached by foot. The best way to the beach is to walk from the Soar Mill Cove Hotel, although it can also be accessed by the South West Coast Path or by by boat from nearby Salcombe. The benefit of Soar Mill Cove is that there are no dog restrictions. Plus, it is very picturesque so remember to bring your camera!
Tips for Dog-Friendly Holidays
Unlike other beach activities like surfing or other water sports, you won’t be overburdened with a mass of supplies and equipment when dog walking. However, there are a few key things you should always have with you. It may seem obvious, but always bring water, especially on hot days. Even if you plan to pay a visit to one of the beachside cafes, you should keep a spare bottle of water on you or in the car in case the cafés are unable to accommodate your pet. If you’re going for a whole day, you will need some sort of food for your pet too. Plus, bags to dispose of waste are a must!
Always remember to take plenty of supplies for yourself. If you are safe and happy, then it’s likely your dog will be too! A standard list of things you might need include food, water, a mobile for emergencies, sensible shoes and suitable clothes for the weather. It is usually best to wear layers.
Before you go on your holiday, remember to double check that the campsite you plan on staying at is happy for you to bring your dog! There are many which welcome dogs, including some close to the beaches we've mentioned here.
Nearby Dog Friendly Attractions
In addition to its many dog-friendly beaches, Devon is full of attractions where you can take your dog. Owners who enjoy visiting stunning natural landscapes should head to Canonteign Falls with their pet. This idyllic area is home to loads of wildlife and England’s highest waterfall! The Dartmoor National Park is open 7 days a week from March to October, with reasonable entry fees.
Devon has many beautiful beaches for you and your dog to explore. Simply check in to your campsite, grab your pooch and head straight to the sea!
