Discover the past in the present with grand historical buildings

Cumbria has some fantastic historical buildings that are great for spending a few hours in during rain showers. Carlisle Cathedral is an impressive red sandstone building which was founded as Carlisle Priory in 1122 by Henry I. The building became a cathedral a decade later and was rebuilt a number of times throughout the years. The cathedral offers a wealth of beautiful interior sights including superb stained glass windows, wood and stone carvings, as well as an impressive treasury exhibition containing a variety of archaeological and religious pieces.

Another must-see historical building is the magnificent Muncaster Castle in Ravenglass. This captivating castle has something for everyone. If the weather clears up, the exceptional gardens of the castle are a pleasure to stroll through at your leisure and feature one of Europe’s biggest Rhododendron collections. Another treat within the gardens is of the feathered variety, as visitors can visit the World Owl Centre which is home to over 40 different kinds of owl.

There is no entry fee for the museum and it boasts a number of galleries displaying a variety of objects related to shipbuilding as well as the history of Barrow-in-Furness.
