There are some amazing waterfalls in Yorkshire waiting to be discovered by those who love exploring the outdoors. Whether you fancy a gentle scenic stroll from the car park or a long hike through the dramatic Yorkshire Dales, these 8 waterfalls in Yorkshire will make your adventures a lot more special…
1. Thornton Force
Thornton Force is located on the River Twiss and has a spectacular drop of around 14 metres over a limestone cliff. The waterfall has a viewing area nearby making it the ideal place to stop for a break or a picnic. Thornton Force can be reached as part of the brilliant Ingleton Waterfalls Walk - a circular trail of around 8km. Thornton is the most famous waterfall on this walk but you’ll see many others including Beezley Falls and Snow Falls.
2. Hardraw Force
Just outside the hamlet of Hardraw is the hidden gem of Hardraw Force. This is reputedly the highest single drop waterfall in England, with water cascading 30 metres over a rocky overhang. Hardraw Force is hidden away in a copse that can only be accessed via the Green Dragon pub which charges a small fee for access to fall.
3. Catrigg Force
In a deep gorge above the village of Stainforth you can find the breath-taking Catrigg Force. This waterfall is made up of 2 main drops of over 6 metres and the water plunges into a picturesque pool at the bottom. The waterfall is hidden from view in a secluded copse surrounded by charming woodland. The views from the top of the fall are just as fantastic, with Pen-y-Ghent fell visible in the distance on a clear day - well worth the climb!
4. Aysgarth Falls
On the River Ure you can stumble across one of the best beauty spots in Yorkshire: Aysgarth Falls. Although not particularly high, these falls are spread over 3 ledges - High, Middle and Lower – with the largest drop being around 2 metres at Middle fall. The fall provides a wonderful setting in which to enjoy the riverside walk that links the 3 parts and is spectacularly powerful after a heavy rainfall. Aysgarth Falls are easily accessible being conveniently close to the A684.
5. Cautley Spout
Part of the Cumbrian Yorkshires Dales just over the border from Yorkshire, Cautley Spout is not to be missed. This dramatic waterfall is the highest in England with a drop of over 198 metres. There is a great walk that begins at Low Haygarth and ascends onto the fells providing a truly magnificent view as you approach Cautley Spout. Getting to the top of the fall is a steep climb but the views of the surrounding landscape are incredible. This area is very quiet and remote, offering a real sense of getting away from it all.
6. West Burton Falls
West Burton Falls are set in an idyllic area in a village of the same name, only a couple of mile from Aysgarth Falls (see above). The falls are small but beautiful and can be very fast after a heavy rainfall. This is a majestic place to visit with a small bridge to cross and a small lagoon at the front of the waterfall. There is an excellent walking route at around 6 miles in length that takes in both the falls. These falls are less visited than some others in the region and remain wonderfully peaceful and uncrowded.
7. Force Gill
Force Gill Waterfall is located close to the Three Peaks walking route between Ribblehead Viaduct and Whernside fell. The fall has a 6 metre vertical drop that lands in a small pool at the bottom before flowing gently down the hills in a rocky stream. This is the place where many walkers begin their ascent to Wherndale and as you climb you’ll see several smaller cascades of Upper Force Gill.
8. Uldale Force
Another hidden gem, Uldale Force is located along the west side of the River Rawthey and is an ideal waterfall to visit if you like a bit of adventure. The trip to the falls can be quite difficult and very slippery after bad weather. The fall is a dramatic, roaring torrent of water that crashes on the rock pool below - where you could even take a swim if you can brave the cold! The area surrounding the fall is very quiet most of the time, so you are unlikely to be disturbing during your visit. You can park your car in the layby just before Rawthey Bridge.
The Yorkshire Dales is home to some of the best natural features in England and waterfalls have to be top of that list. Seeking out one or two of these on the many brilliant walking routes that the Dales have to offer is well worth the effort.
