Castles are steeped in history. They stand solidly for hundreds of years, with thousands of people walking their floorboards and flagstones. It is this mix of spectacular architecture and rich human history which makes them such fascinating places to visit. For those camping in the south-west of England, here are our top 6 Cornish castles.
1 – Tintagel Castle
By far the most famous on this list, Tintagel is reputed to be the birthplace of the legendary King Arthur. Whether you believe in the legend or not, you can learn about the castle’s interesting history as you explore. The ruins are set high on the rugged Cornish coastline, and by heading down a footpath you can also visit Merlin’s cave – believed to be the home of the famous wizard! Adult tickets cost £5.90, children between 5 and 15 years old cost £3.50, with families of 5 paying £15.30.
2 – Pendennis Castle
Another castle offering coastal views is Pendennis Castle. Situated at one end of the Falmouth estuary, you can enjoy views right the way over the coast from the roof of the keep. Here you can enjoy exploring a varied history dating back to the Tudor times, since King Henry VIII commissioned the fortress. Take a walk through the extensive grounds and head down to Little Dennis – a small stone blockhouse built on the headland. Entrance to the English Heritage site costs £6.70 for adults, £4 for children.
3 – Restormel Castle
The grounds of Restormel Castle, located near Lostwithiel, are a haven for wildlife. Flowers, plants, wildlife and birds all thrive in the surrounding woodlands and the nearby River Fowey. The ruins of the castle itself are in remarkable condition – especially when you consider it has stood atop an early Norman mound since the 13th century! The site is closed during winter, reopening each April. Tickets are reasonable at £3.60 for adults, £2.20 for children.
4 – Pengersick Castle
To explore a Castle with a spooky history, visit Pengersick near Praa Sands in Penzance. After building the castle in the 12th century, the Pengersick family lived fascinating lives on the site – including being struck by the plague in the 15th century. The castle is now believed to be one of the most haunted in Cornwall, and there are over 20 reported ghosts in the castle and grounds! Every Halloween the castle runs afternoon and night-time ghost walks for the brave, plus fun children’s events in the day. The castle is currently closed for refurbishment, but do visit the website to see the reopening date and prices.
5 – St Michael’s Mount
Perhaps the most unusually-located castle on the list, St Micheal’s Mount is an island off the coast by the town of Mazarion. Take a short walk down the causeway from the mainland or a boat trip, which costs as little as £2 for adults and £1 for children. On the island you’ll learn about the local myths and legends, the history of the castle and the island itself. You can also explore the beautiful subtropical garden. For a combined ticket to see the castle and gardens, adults pay £9.60, children pay £4.80. Family tickets are also available, as are cheaper tickets to see the castle or gardens only.
6 – Launceston Castle
The picturesque castle of Launceston is set on a large natural mound, providing views over the lush green Cornish countryside. Once serving as a prison for some famous historical figures, the circular keep and 13th-century tower have a fascinating 1000 year old history for you to delve into. The castle closes during the winter, but in the summer they also host music and theatre events outdoors. Entry prices are £3.60 for adults for adults and £2.20 for children.
