Holidays can be pretty pricey but there’s no reason you can’t have a fantastic trip to York while staying on a budget. There are many free things to do in York that cater to families, individuals, couples and friends. We’ve highlighted eight attractions that are often overlooked by visitors so you can enjoy a great holiday that is both uncrowded and affordable.
National Railway Museum
For fun-filled free attractions you’re on the right track with the National Railway Museum. This is the largest railway museum in the world and is open year round. There are lots of free activities as well as a railroad-themed play area to keep kids entertained so it is a good choice for the whole family.
York St Mary’s
York St Mary’s is the contemporary art venue located in a medieval church. This is well worth visiting both for viewing the exhibitions and the church itself, which has York’s tallest steeple, measuring 47 metres high. There is an annual commissioned art installation or existing artist’s work displayed and an increased number of exhibitions will be accessible through to 2015 due to the York Art Gallery’s redevelopment.
City Walls
Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to walk on ancient medieval walls? York’s city walls are the most complete medieval city walls in England. The walls are a Grade 1 listed building and a scheduled ancient monument. With its fantastic views of the city and River Ouse, its the perfect place to imagine you are defending the city from invaders!
The Shambles
Winner of Google's 'Most Picturesque Street' in Britain, the Shambles is a popular tourist attraction containing shops and dining venues. Wandering along the street itself is a wonderful way to take in the eye-catching architecture for free. You can also visit the shrine of St. Margaret Clitherow who was crushed to death in 1586 for being a practising Catholic and sheltering Catholic priests.
The Guildhall
The Guildhall is a replica of a 15th century building that was destroyed in 1942 during an air raid. This site used to be a meeting place for the guilds and some of the walls which survived the air raid have been incorporated in the reconstruction.
St Michael le Belfrey
This impressive church offers free entry for sightseeing visits generally between 11am and 3pm Monday to Saturday. However since St Michael le Belfrey is run by volunteers, it is advisable to check with the church office to ensure it will be accessible for your visit. The current building has been around since the 1500s and Guy Fawkes was baptised in the church in 1570.
Rowntree Park
Located on the banks of the River Ouse, Rowntree Park was built as a scenic memorial to those who fought in the World Wars. Across its 30 acres, you will find children’s play areas as well as facilities for bowling, tennis and basketball. Enjoy walking around the lake, woodland and flower beds for free!
Dean’s Park
Dean’s Park offers fantastic views, a great place to stretch out and enjoy a break during a busy day, as well as soft drink and ice cream refreshments available during summer. You may also want to view nearby York Minster. There is an admission charge for entering this cathedral but it doesn’t cost anything to take in the magnificent exterior!
Other attractions
Though closed for redevelopment until Easter 2015, York Art Gallery is definitely a place to keep in mind when visiting York. While the gallery itself is closed, you can still view many of the paintings and ceramics which are displayed in special exhibitions in other venues across the city.
Families with children under 16 may want to visit Yorkshire Museum and York Castle Museum. Children under 16 get in free to either museum, while a special offer of £10 per ticket for adults will grant access to both museums. The Yorkshire Museum includes numerous collections covering a range of areas from archaeology to geology to astronomy and more, along with beautiful gardens also which have free entry. York Castle Museum offers the likes of an entire Victorian street to explore, a military collection, as well as lots of activities for kids.
