During the warmer months, many beaches ban dogs to make way for the swathes of families and children on their holidays. It can be hard to know which beaches you and your dog can visit. However, no matter what time of year you are planning your holiday, there are a number of different dog friendly beaches in Cornwall. Here, we have listed some of the very best for both you and your faithful pet.

Newquay

Newquay has several stunning beaches you can take your dog. Crantock Beach is a huge expanse of open sands perfect for your pup to frolic all year round with toilets and a car park close by. With breath-taking views, the beach also benefits from two fantastic, dog friendly pubs nearby, the Old Albion Inn and the Cornishman. The Cornishman serves up doggy biscuits for your four-pawed pal and good, traditional British food for yourself. It may be wise to take a water bowl for your dog in case you do not stop by at a pub. It’s thirsty work running around sand dunes all day!

Watergate Bay Beach is an idyllic spot situated at the foot of steep cliffs with beautiful golden sands, rock pools and crystal blue water. Despite the masses of people that flock to Watergate for it’s ‘high standard’ rating for UK bathing water and its popular surf school, dogs are welcome year round. There is car parking, toilets, shops and restaurants along the beach front. There is also camping nearby both beaches where you can take your dog.

East Cornwall

On the opposite side of Cornwall is Gorran Haven Beach, not too far south of St Austell. Dogs must be kept on leads here but this beach is sure to create lasting memories with its quaint village backdrop, inspiring views and good facilities. The heat can get too much for your pet if out and about all day so be sure to stop for short breaks in cooler, shaded areas to keep them comfortable.

Not far from Gorran Haven is Portholland Beach. Actually two beaches (East and West), they join together when the tide is low to form one large stretch of sand which is ideal for a visit with your pup. Relatively peaceful all year round, it is ideal if you are looking for a beach ‘away from it all’ and plenty of open space. For other attractions, the village is not far from both St Austell and Truro which offer plenty of things to do. Campsites and caravan parks are available near to both beaches.

Bude

Widemouth Beach in Bude is another great beach where you can take your dog and enjoy the panoramic views. Split into ‘North’ and ‘South’ Beach (also known as Black Rock Beach), this vast stretch of golden sand reveals hundreds of rock pools at low tide that your dog will be keen to explore. Dogs are allowed all year on the South side. The beach has ample car parking with toilets, beach shops, cafés and great options for camping close by.

Northern Cornwall is also home to Summerleaze Beach, just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Bude with plenty of parking available. Dogs are allowed throughout the year but must be kept on leads from May to September. Make sure you take poop bags with you as mess on the beaches will not be tolerated. The beach has good facilities and beautiful sand dunes. Summerleaze gets very congested in the summer months so be aware. If your dog is timid, it may be better to go in the cooler seasons.

Penzance

Long Rock Beach in Penzance is another great sand and pebble beach ideal for throwing a ball around with your dog. Dogs are welcome here most of the year except during Easter to October. Your four-legged friend will love the open space and paddling in the sea away from the crowds of the summer. But make sure you take a towel with you to dry him off before getting back in the car. Facilities are close to the beach and there are many options for dog friendly camping and caravanning. Take the popular scenic walk from Penzance to the nearby town of Marazion. At about 2 miles in length, it is the perfect walk for your pooch as there are plenty of dog friendly attractions including pubs and other beaches on the way.

Holidays in Cornwall make a great option if you are looking to bring your dog with you. Cornish beaches are some of the most beautiful and being able to take your dog is a bonus! Your pal will love exploring the great outdoors and you will be sure to make some great family memories.
