Grimsthorpe Castle
Grimsthorpe Castle is an elegant country house dating from the 13th century. During a visit you can view the stunning collection of paintings, tapestries, furniture and ceramics within the interior of this historic house. However, the gardens and surrounding parkland are just as enticing. The park can be explored on foot or by bike (bikes are available for hire) and is home to a variety of wildlife such as deer, swans, ducks, red kites and butterflies. Tickets for the castle, park and gardens cost £10.50 for adults and £4 for children aged 5 to 18.
Tattershall Castle
Tattershall Castle is an eye-catching red brick structure that was constructed in the 15th century and incorporates six floors. Beautiful stained glass windows are some of the delights waiting to greet visitors as they explore the castle interior and the panoramic views from the top of the battlements ensure there is plenty to see outside as well. Visitors can also explore the castle grounds, taking in the two moats and perhaps catching a glimpse of the local Egyptian geese.
Lincoln Castle
Lincoln Castle is currently undergoing a restoration process but still welcomes visitors to explore this magnificent building. Entry costs £2 per adult and is free for children younger than 5 years old and admission fees include discovering the castle via an enjoyable guided tour. Construction of the castle began in the 11th century on the orders of William the Conqueror and it has a varied history, having served as both a court and a prison. The castle usually houses a copy of Magna Carta which is currently on tour but will return to the castle in 2015.
Bolingbroke Castle
Though only the ruins of Bolingbroke Castle remain, they are nonetheless an intriguing sight that can be explored for free. King Henry IV was born at the castle in 1367 and several centuries later the castle was conquered during the Civil War by Parliamentarian forces in 1643 and was subsequently destroyed. The surrounding landscape provides a good picnic spot so why not bring a packed lunch with you and enjoy some refreshments in an enticing historical location.
Belvoir Castle
There is no denying that Belvoir Castle is aptly named. ‘Belvoir’ means beautiful view and from its hilltop position the castle certainly does provide beautiful views in all directions. However, the castle itself is also exceptionally attractive and is the fourth castle to have been built on the site. Construction of the present castle was finished in the 19th century and visitors will marvel at the lavish interiors which are filled with wonderful collections of furniture, tapestries, sculptures and porcelain. In addition to the castle, the beautiful gardens are equally enticing and feature summer houses, a range of plants and an alluring woodland path. A variety of exciting events are held in the castle park each year as well, including the likes of firework displays as well as marathon and horse driving events. Tickets for access to the castle and gardens cost £15 for adults and £8 for children.
