Hayle is a portside town right on the Cornish coast so perfect for anyone looking to explore the sunnier side of England, particularly in the summer months. The town is perfectly placed close to Penzance for trips over to the Scilly Isles.
Hayle brings together rigged Cornish countryside with a town built around fishing and brightly coloured boats.
The Hayle town trail takes you around all the main sights of the town so roam around learning about its history and then stop off to grab a proper local Cornish pasty.
Those who are keen on water sports will appreciate the fantastic beaches which are known for their good surfing. You can get active with activities such as kayaking, canoeing, swimming and windsurfing here too. Hayle Towans Beach is great for digging around in rock pools and serves up 3 miles of blissfully golden sand.
Walks in the area are often by the coast with the sea on one side and hardy seaside flowers nestled in the dunes on the other. The most popular guided walks, apart from the town trail, are the Millponds Trail and Towans Trail which are circular and target some of the best wildlife spotting areas. There is an RSPB nature reserve in the area and it’s a big hit with birdwatchers.
Hayle has been given 'Walkers are welcome' status which means it has something special to offer walkers.
Try Godvery Head for time with seals during their regular sunbathing and catch a glimpse of dolphins in the water.
A trip to Hayle's Oral History Centre which you can find in the old Brewery Offices explores the Cornish past through the voices of those who lived it. It will bring to life the world of years gone by and is told exclusively by local residents.
The Estuary Reserve that runs beside Hayle offers superb views and don’t miss the Copperhouse Pool area where over 18,000 birds can be seen in winter.
Further afield you might like to head to Gwithian which boasts a sandy beach over three miles long and here you can try your hand at surfing the waves, as the local surf school hires out equipment. If you’re not yet a pro don’t be put off, they offer lessons for beginners.
Around the coast you can get to St Ives which offers more stunning coastline, plus museums, galleries and plenty of places to grab a tasty morsel or a Cornish cream tea.
